In Charlotte, garden centers are busiest on spring weekends, when new stock arrives and popular plants sell out; weekday mornings are calmer and staff have more time to answer questions. Ask which plants are hardy for your USDA zone in North Carolina, whether trees and shrubs carry a replacement guarantee (one year is common), and whether the nursery delivers and plants large items. Fall is the best planting season for many trees and perennials, and end-of-season sales are common. Many nurseries close or shorten hours in winter, so check the listing for current hours and Google rating before you go.

Charlotte is in North Carolina, in the Southeast, where summers are long, hot and humid, winters are mild, and afternoon thunderstorms and the hurricane season from June to November can change plans at short notice. Getting around Charlotte is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across North Carolina's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

In my opinion as someone who enjoys nature and things to be quiet it is a hidden gem in the queen city. It's only $10 a person for general admission, there's at least 1 1/2 hrs. Of walking time if you take your time. And overall very pretty location. We came when it was cloudy and not hotter than Satan, so I think that helped the experience. We didn't see many if any birds however. But it was quiet, we were almost the only ones there and honestly for a private date, proposal and maybe something small it seems like a nice little location. The nature/flowers were enough for us. My only downside, it seemed...under kept. Almost like the process of no one maintaining it. It didn't seem cleaner, in a overgrown sort of way, not trash or anything like that. But anyone we met they were friendly and overall the experience was still nice. Will come back for our anniversary very likely.

We were given tickets to attend this hidden gem in South Charlotte. We have lived here for over 30 years and did not know anything about this garden. Situated within a quiet South Charlotte neighborhood, the garden sits on a few cres behind a beautiful home. It is a very well maintained series of paths and walkways with all kinds of interesting character an amazing scenery. There's also a large amount of wildlife, especially birds. We were treated to see a huge mother owl and her new baby right in front of us sitting on a tree. If you have the opportunity to make your way here please do. It was a wonderful way to spend the morning and then we grabbed lunch at a local eatery.

We lived outside Charlotte some six years and have good friends in the city whom we visit regularly, but had somehow never managed to go to Wing Haven. Today we did so, and I was bowled over. The welcome we received by the docent Mary Stokes was warm, and her overview of the house and garden, its history, and the lives of Edwin and Elizabeth Clarkson was perfect. It's astonishing to think that when the Clarksons bought this piece of property, it was essentially a big patch of red clay that they then turned into an amazing garden and bird sanctuary. Walking along the winding pathways and hearing the Carolina wrens, cardinals, and other birds calling was a highight of our time in Charlotte. I highly recommend this magnificent treasure in the heart of the busy city.

Every year I play and sing for Wing Havens sip and see event. It’s such a great escape tucked away in Charlotte. Perfect for dates or just being one with nature without driving to the mountains.

What a wonderful little place with outdoor gardens. I’m sure it’s beautiful in spring when all the plants bloom. The outdoor area is great, offering plenty of space and shade during hot days. You can’t beat it if you just want to look at a garden and visit home and go to Noah’s Carolina, which is good for kids and adults, especially when you're tired. It works out well. They also have another small 1-acre plot down the road that is free with your paid admission.
